Synopsis
Armand, an old man living on the streets of Paris, relishes his solitary life in the beautiful city. He is happy with his carefree existence, begging and doing odd jobs to keep himself warm and fed. With simple pleasures and no cares, what more could he need?
Then one day just before Christmas, Armand returns to his favorite spot beneath the bridge to find three cold and hungry children. Although he has no interest in children, Armand soon finds himself caring for the small family. It does not take Armand very long to realize that he must do whatever it takes to get them a real home.
my thoughts
I chose this book to read aloud during Christmas break and I think it was the perfect choice. It takes place during the Christmas season and its full of all types of emotional adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire plot which brought on some very interesting conversations about homelessness, poverty and even child hunger. That being said, I wouldn’t allow my elementary aged kids to read this on their own because of said topics, but I do think it’s a thought provoking book to read together as a family.
Rating:
My Third Graders Thoughts
“I liked it but the best part I liked was when the kids were singing and Armand had his hat out so that people could put money in it. And the other I really liked was when Armand took the kids to see his Gypsie friends at their car house. I think this is a good kids book because Armand found the kids and was helping to take care of them.”
My First Graders Thoughts
“I loved it because the grandpa helped them and because there was snow. I think it is a good kids book because we’re learning.”
My Pre-Kindergarteners Thoughts
“I liked it but I don’t know why.”
