Nurturing a Life of Faith: 5 Essential Books for the Gospel Centered Home

Have you been searching for different ways to cultivate a Gospel centered home? I’m that mom who is always on the search for a new and fresh way to invite Christ to abide in our home. By that I mean, I’m always looking for ways that I can better myself as a mom, a wife, and a homemaker. How can I make my home a refuge to those who live here, but also, to those who visit?

Being an avid reader, I’ve relied on a few resources to help me get there. These books have been great at inspiring new ideas but also convicting me of behaviors I didn’t know existed that actually pulled away from cultivating a Gospel centered home. Today I’m sharing with you five books that are my top favorite in providing biblical teachings on curating a Christian lifestyle within the walls of your home.

Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Early

You long for tender moments with your children–but do you ever find yourself too busy to stop, make eye contact, and say something you really mean? Daily habits are powerful ways to shape the heart–but do you find yourself giving in to screen time just to get through the day? You want to parent with purpose–but do you know how to start? In Habits of the Household, Earley gives you the tools you need to create structure–from mealtimes to bedtimes–that free you to parent toddlers, kids, and teens with purpose.

The Life Giving Home by Sally Clarkson

Does your home sometimes feel like just a place to eat, sleep, and change clothes on the way to the next activity? Do you long for “home” to mean more than a place where you stash your stuff? Wouldn’t you love it to become a haven of warmth, rest, and joy . . . the one place where you and your family can’t wait to be? There is good news waiting for you in the pages of The Lifegiving Home. Every day of your family’s life can be as special and important to you as it already is to God.

Holy Hygge by Jamie Erickson

In Holy Hygge, author Jamie Erickson unites the popular Danish practice with the deep, theological truths of the gospel. She unpacks the seven tenets of hygge: hospitality, relationships, well-being, atmosphere, comfort, contentment, and rest. In addition, Erickson shows how the external veneer of a lifestyle can create a life-giving home only when placed under the hope of the gospel. Holy Hygge provides practical ideas for using hygge to gather people and introduce them to faith in Christ.

The Read Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie

Reading aloud with your children not only has the power to change a family–it can help your children grow into thoughtful, intelligent, empathetic adults. We all know that connecting deeply with our families can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven society. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to be fully present with our children, even after they can read themselves, but it isn’t always easy to do.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver

The life of a woman today isn’t all that different from the lives of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet . . . but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him . . . yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, he invites you to choose “the better part”—a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service.

and last but definitely not least…

The Holy Bible

You didn’t think I would leave the Holy Scriptures out of this post, did you? Of course, my number one book recommendation to cultivate a Gospel Centered Home is the Bible itself. It points you to Jesus, God’s Grace, love and mercy throughout every single page. And teaches you how to be that loving spouse, that loving parent, and that Christian who reflects Christ in every place they go. Here a couple of Bible options to get you started:

CSB She Reads Truth Rose Gold Bible

ESV Single Column Journal Bible

Have you read any of these books? I’d love for you to share your personal thoughts in the comments. If you haven’t read any, let me know, which one you are anticipating reading the most.
